His research interests include the design of nanostructured materials, from quantum mechanics to thermokinetics, for applications in extreme environments from aerospace applications through to nuclear reactors, radiation damage modelling, hydrogen embrittlement, and the engineering and safety of integral and passive small modular reactors. Miles lectures on Nuclear Materials as part of the Natural Sciences Tripos and several courses for nuclear engineers on the MPhil in Nuclear Energy. Miles has supervised first- and second-year Mechanics, Materials and Structures, and directed studies across the Engineering Tripos for more than a decade. Prior to his arrival at Cambridge, he worked for Rolls-Royce on the design of the Royal Navy’s Dreadnought-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.
